The U of M Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) invites nominations and applications for the position of Business Administrator. As part of the UMTRI senior management team, the Business Administrator has primary responsibility for developing and administering the financial, research administration, information technology, human resource, and facilities functions of UMTRI. The Business Administrator reports to the UMTRI Director and interacts with administrators in the UM Office of Research (UMOR) and in schools and colleges.
The Business Administrator provides oversight of the financial and physical environment at UMTRI and supports the research faculty and staff carrying out UMTRI’s research program and Strategic Plan.
The position requires a highly-skilled, people-oriented, strategic-thinking, proactive individual who will:
Carry out financial planning, budgeting and financial management to meet UMTRI and UMOR requirements, ensuring that University financial, administrative, and internal controls policies are followed.
Oversee the management of UMTRI’s IT systems.
Provide financial data, budgets and administrative plans for research proposals, in a manner acceptable to federal government contracting agencies.
Liaise with external sponsors regarding contractual matters concerning research programs in support of ORSP.
Provide performance statistics which support business development and strategic planning.
Oversee the management of all facilities.
Manage the human resource functions of UMTRI.
Manage administrative support staff (typically 6-10 research administrators and general assistants plus others) fostering a climate of teamwork and high performance among the staff. Review direct report performance, set goals and priorities and meet deadlines. Resolve operating problems, staff complaints and grievances.
Provide support for the recruitment and development of staff.
As required, represent UMTRI’s interests to the broader campus and UMOR
As a member of UMTRI’s management team, participate in strategic planning, policy development, budget, communications and training activities.
Support continuous improvement in all aspects of UMTRI services.
Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, accounting or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
7-10 years of significant administrative/supervisory experience preferably in academic or research units.
Demonstrated ability to manage various aspects of a complex organization and proven ability to successfully supervise and mentor a variety of individuals.
Significant experience in sponsored research management, including federal government contracts.
Extensive experience managing staff, services and facilities.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, integrate activities and manage change.
Strong written, verbal communication and organizational skills.
Master’s Degree in business administration, accounting or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Extensive knowledge of U of M policies and procedures.
Extensive knowledge and experience with MPathways financial and administrative systems.
Experience with Business Objects and Tableau queries.
Experience as a Research Administrator at the University.
