This position supports U-M's fundamental commitment to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and conduct while ensuring the implementation of tax compliance with the rules, regulations, and responsibilities. The tax accountant will assist with tax compliance, including filing tax returns and related matters for U-M and its affiliates, and will work collaboratively with the tax team to implement best practices that support our strategic priorities and initiatives. This position reports to the Tax Manager.
- Research and keep current with the tax law and reporting responsibilities.
- Develop 'best practices', including polices and tool kits in managing resulting tax risks.
- Communicate with stakeholders, including schools, colleges and units as well as with legal representatives, e.g. with the investment firms, taxing agencies, and institutional peers.
- Prepare and review various tax returns and forms, including exempt organizations, partnerships, taxable corporations, multi-state filings, foreign investments and activities, charitable remainder trusts and similar filings, among others.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance or accounting, or an equivalent combination of education is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with a variety of individuals and units.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of staff.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet pressing due dates.
- Excellent analytical and independent problem solving skills.
A CPA certification or a master’s degree in accounting or a related field is desired.
This is a full-time position; Monday through Friday. As part of the University of Michigan Finance Division Future of Work initiative, this position may work onsite, remote, or hybrid (both onsite work and remotely) based on the business needs of the unit.
