The Long Ridge School seeks a Director of Finance to join our leadership team and serve as a strategic and trusted partner to the Head of School and Board of Trustees. This role is central to the school’s financial health, responsible operations, and future planning.
Overview of the Role
Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of Finance oversees the school’s financial systems and business operations, including budgeting, accounting, payroll, benefits, human resources administration, and risk management. This is a senior leadership position that works closely with the Board, faculty, staff, families, and external partners.
This role is ideal for a collaborative, steady, and solutions-oriented professional who enjoys both strategic thinking and hands-on financial management within a close-knit school community.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Management
Oversee all financial operations, including accounting, billing, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, payroll, and benefits administration
Prepare the annual budget and provide regular financial reporting and projections to the Head of School, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees
Maintain appropriate internal controls and ensure compliance with financial policies and best practices
Supervise the bookkeeper and oversee accounts payable, receivable, and general ledger functions
Manage the annual financial audit, 990 return and required filings in partnership with the school’s external auditor
Human Resources & Risk Management
Oversee day-to-day HR operations, including onboarding, personnel records, payroll coordination, benefits administration, and compliance
Partner with the Head of School on employment policies, contracts, and handbook updates
Manage risk management functions, including insurance coverage, workers’ compensation, and related compliance
Serve as a liaison with legal, insurance, and benefits partners as needed

Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or related field
5+ years of experience in financial management within a school, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization strongly preferred
Knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and G Suite
Experience with accounting and payroll systems (QuickBooks, ADP, or similar platforms)
Experience with FACTS a plus
Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
A collaborative mindset, sound judgment, and a sense of humor
